About Blackened x Willett Cask Strength Rye Whiskey<\/h2>\n

The behemoths of heavy metal Metallica entered the spirits business with Blackened American Whiskey, a blend of bourbon and rye whiskeys with an emphasis on the former. It was carefully selected by the late Master Distiller Dave Pickerell of WhistlePig fame, who is considered the founding father of craft distilling. Ever since he was a West Point student and later chemistry professor, Dave was interested in how sound could affect substances on a molecular level. They teamed up with Metallica and their long-time collaborators \u2015 the innovating sound-engineering wizards Meyer Sound \u2015 to create a special subwoofer that would transfer vibrations efficiently through the casks. They dubbed this proprietary process Black Noise, trademarked it, then proceeded to play tracks by Metallica \u2015 chosen specifically for each batch by the band themselves \u2015 to the whiskey.<\/p>\n

The vibration helps each drop of liquid seep deeper into the wood, extracting flavors in the process, one heavy riff at a time. The result is a perfect balance of sweetness and rye spice, with additional fruity notes that come from finishing in black brandy casks. It’s aged for more than 8 years and bottled at 90 proof.<\/p>\n

The Blackened X Willett Cask Strength Rye Whiskey stems from the same collaboration, now “remastered” by Master Distiller and Blender Rob Dietrich (Sweet Amber Distilling), and Master Distiller Drew Kulsveen (Willett Distillery) with the spirit coming from Bardstown, Kentucky-based Willett Distillery. Hand-selected by Dietrich and Kulsveen from the Family Estate Selection, the whiskey was aged in new charred American oak and finished in Madeira casks employing the proprietary Black Noise process, then bottled at 109.6 proof.<\/p>\n

About Rye<\/h2>\n

As American as the bald eagle, rye whiskey was first brewed in the American Northeast in the 1600s. Even George Washington distilled it after leaving the Oval Office, so there\u2019s no way of denying its origin.
It\u2019s distinguished from bourbon for its original and unique spicy notes.<\/p>\n

By law, rye whiskey must be made from at least 51% rye grain, aged in new and charred oak barrels for at least two years, and bottled at no more than 62,5% ABV.<\/p>\n

The nose opens with plenty of rye spice, vanilla, toffee, and sweet dark fruit notes. It’s pleasantly sweet and equally spicy on the palate with baking spices, fruit, dark chocolate, tobacco, and nuts.
