About Four Gate Sherry Finished Rye DownUnder Batch 16<\/h2>\n

Four Gate Whiskey Company started releasing its small-batch expressions with innovative finishes in 2019, gaining much critical acclaim from the start. Batches 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, and 8 all received Whisky Advocate scores of 90 points or higher, and various well-regarded writers and online reviewers named batches 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 10 amongst the top 10 American whiskeys of 2019 and 2020.<\/p>\n

The 16th release is called Rye DownUnder. It’s a 7-year-old rye whiskey that was distilled in Indiana from a mash bill of 95% rye and 5% malted barley. The base is the same whiskey that they released unfinished in 2020 as their first rye whiskey expression. This time, it was finished in Apera sherry casks that were imported from Australia by Kelvin Cooperage. The barrel-proof spirit was bottled at 110.2 proof and is limited to a scant 2,168 bottles.<\/p>\n

About Four Gate Whiskey Company<\/h2>\n

In 2018 Bill Straub and Bob D’Antoni, both whiskey enthusiasts, founded the Four Gate Whiskey Company in Kentucky and launched their mission to release extra small batches of unique combinations of whiskey and finish barrels. Specializing in sourced whiskey blends and partnering with Kelvin Cooperage, a family-owned barrel supplier founded in 1963 in Scotland and currently based in Louisville, the combinations of quality whiskey blends and used barrels they put together are truly ecclectic. From bourbon finished in cognac and dark rum casks to split stave casks, there is really no idea too wild for Four Gate and they make it work. <\/p>\n

About Rye<\/h2>\n

As American as the bald eagle, rye whiskey was first brewed in the American Northeast in the 1600s. Even George Washington distilled it after leaving the Oval Office, so there\u2019s no way of denying its origin.
It\u2019s distinguished from bourbon for its original and unique spicy notes.<\/p>\n

By law, rye whiskey must be made from at least 51% rye grain, aged in new and charred oak barrels for at least two years, and bottled at no more than 62,5% ABV.<\/p>\n
